Why so many fences out here lean by year three
Drive through almost any neighborhood off Redwood Road and you'll spot one. A run of vinyl tipping toward the neighbor's yard, a gate that won't latch anymore, a corner post that's started to wobble.
The fence itself is rarely the problem. It's the holes.
Saratoga Springs gets a lot of wind, much of it coming straight across Utah Lake with nothing to slow it down, and a 6-foot privacy fence catches all of it. Then winter freezes and thaws the ground over and over, and every cycle lifts a shallow post a little more. Depending on where your lot is, you might be digging in heavy clay near the lake or rock up toward the mountains. Neither one is forgiving.
So we dig every post hole at least 30 inches, which gets below the frost line here, and set the posts in concrete. Corner, end and gate posts get bigger holes because that's where the strain is.
It takes longer than setting posts in 18 inches of dirt. It's also the difference between a fence that's still straight in ten years and one you're propping up with a 2x4.

What a fence costs in Saratoga Springs
Everybody wants a number before they call, so here are honest ballparks for 2026. The real price depends on how many feet you need, how many gates, whether an old fence has to come out, and how rocky the ground turns out to be.

Just closed on a new build?
Builders here hand most homes over with a graded dirt yard and nothing around it. If you've got a dog or little kids, the fence is probably the first thing you want done. Most of our new-build jobs go like this:
- Call when you have a closing date. Spring gets busy, so earlier is better.
- Send us the plot plan. We can price it from the plan before we ever come out. If you can find your property pins, even better.
- Get HOA approval. Most HOAs want to see the style, color and height first. We'll give you the specs to submit.
- We call Blue Stakes. It's free, and the lines get marked in about two business days.
- Install. Posts first, then panels once the concrete sets. One to three days for most yards.

Questions we get a lot
How long does it take to put in a fence?
Most backyards take one to three days. We set the posts first and let the concrete firm up before the panels go on. Getting on the schedule is the longer wait: a week or two most of the year, longer in spring.
Do I need a permit for a fence in Saratoga Springs?
The city has rules on height, front-yard fences and corner lots, and most neighborhoods here have an HOA with its own rules on style and color. We check both before we order anything, and if you need a permit, we'll tell you at the estimate.
Vinyl or wood?
Vinyl if you never want to think about it again and your HOA allows it (most do). Wood if you like the look, want to spend a little less up front, and don't mind staining it every few years. We wrote up a longer comparison too.
Who figures out where the property line is?
It's your line, but we'll help. We look for the survey pins at the estimate and work from your plot plan. If the pins are gone or the line's in question, it's worth paying a surveyor before a fence goes in.
Can you fix my fence instead of replacing it?
Often, yes. Leaning posts can be reset in concrete, broken vinyl panels can be swapped out, and sagging gates can be rehung. If the whole run is going, we'll tell you that too.
Do you put fences in during the winter?
As long as the ground isn't frozen solid, yes. Fall is actually a good time. Schedules are shorter than in spring and the ground digs a lot easier than it will in January.
